WHY SHOULD I HIRE YOU?

“Why should I hire YOU?”

This is the classic question most of us hear during an interview. It’s often preceded by the phrase, “I’ve already interviewed another person for this position who looks perfect.” Then comes the killer question… “Why should I hire YOU?”

Be careful to avoid clever retorts or comedic one-liners here. Your interview is serious business and a wrong answer will send you packing. This is, in fact, the one question that interviewers like to ask because the answer can so easily separate the contenders from the also-rans. Give a wrong answer and the large “Game Over” sign flashes above your head.

[i]The ‘Story’ Approach[/i]

What they really want to know is, [i]“How are you different than all the other candidates who have applied for this position?” [/i] With this in mind, a good way to approach your answer here is to launch into your best “story” that answers this question, “Will you go the extra mile?”

Why is the employer asking why they should hire you? Because there are only five areas of interest that they have about you as a candidate:

1.  Your skills
2.  Your knowledge about the company
3.  Your manageability
4.  Your affordability
5.  Whether you can go above and beyond your job description

In this day of “lean and mean” operations philosophy, employers are looking for employees who can think bigger and perform duties above and beyond their jobs.

Remember to tell a good story – FACTS TELL – STORIES SELL!  Back up the WHY with real examples that stand you apart from the crowd and personalise your achievements.

Demonstrate Your Accomplishments

Realize that there will always be competing candidates with a higher skill level, more experience, more education/training, or even a smoother interviewing style. The one equalizer though, is the ability to demonstrate how you have risen above and gone that extra mile to accomplish an important task, complete the job or realize an important goal.

Here, you recount that story of exactly how you worked 60-hour weeks, acquired new skills, or whatever it took to distinguish yourself and meet the challenge head on to successfully make the sale, save the project or rescue a client. If you can monetize (put a £pound value on) the end result, your story will only be that much more dramatic.

Tell It Often

Knowing this ahead of time, it’s wise to put in the time beforehand to work on your answer to this question. Pick your best example of how you went above and beyond in your job. Work on your story to perfect it. Set the scene, describe the challenge and describe your role and the successful conclusion. Use this as an example of how you use your particular set of skills in an extraordinary time to “give it your all” and produce a clear benefit to your employer.

Since no other candidate can duplicate your own personal story here, you’ll make a memorable impression. Not only that, but quite possibly you’ll pull yourself ahead of that “perfect” candidate who preceded you.

Play Poker for a living?

This weekend sees the Winter Irish Poker Festival take place in City West Dublin.  I am a big poker fan, and love to play poker in The Bridgeclub Banbridge.

It is a 3 day event and we are on day 2 – im keeping a close eye on the Paddypower poker blog to watch for chip counts of some players I know.

Poker is becoming a popular profession, and more acceptable… for men and for women!

'Playing poker is my only source of income, but I've never seen it as a job'

Maria says: ‘Playing poker is my only source of income, but I’ve never seen it as a job’

Maria Demetriou, 34, is a professional poker player based in Grantham, Lincolnshire. She offers some tricks of the trade.

 

What do you actually do?

I play poker with people in casinos and poker clubs for money. I play cash poker, where you put up your own money, and take part in poker tournaments, where there’s an entry fee of a certain amount – from around £50 up to £1,000 or more – then it’s free, and the winner takes a percentage of the money in the prize pool at the end. I generally prefer to play “live” poker in front of other people, rather than online poker.

What’s your working schedule like?

I work for myself, so I decide how often I play and when. Usually, I play two or three nights a week in a poker club or casino, plus sometimes a couple of tournaments on the internet. A standard 100 player poker tournament might last from 8pm until 4am – but you might get knocked out after 10 minutes. If you’re playing cash poker, you can play for as long as you can afford to keep going.

What do you love about it?

It’s the absolute freedom from the humdrum, nine-to-five rat race. I hate to be pinned down in an office. I have no boss, and I work when I want to. Playing poker is my only source of income, but I’ve never seen it as a job. I really enjoy the psychological aspect of the game. You have to get inside people’s heads.

What’s not great about it?

It can be infuriating. There is a lot of luck involved in poker, so you can outplay your opponent but still lose if they get a really lucky hand. A single card can ruin everything. But that element of luck can work in your favour as well. If there was no luck involved, it would be boring.

What skills do you need to do the job well?

You need the mental discipline to make the right choice at the right time. You can’t allow yourself to make irrational decisions based on a bad hand. You’ve got to focus and carry on with the game. You should be analytical, with the psychological skills to read people. For instance, if someone picks up their chips and you notice that their hand is shaking, it could mean that they have a fantastic hand. Having a good grasp of maths, and understanding odds and percentages, will help you – although some players ignore maths and just go by gut instinct.

What advice would you give someone with their eye on your job?

Think long and hard before you give up your day job. I often wish that I had a second source of income. In March, I came fifth in a big tournament and won £26,500 – but you can easily play for months without winning any significant amount of money. With live poker, you have to pay for travel costs, hotels and petrol, so there are expenses involved. Ideally you should keep your poker money and household money separate – you should have at least a year’s worth of living expenses saved up to cover you through the bad times.

What’s the salary and career path like?

How much you earn is completely down to the individual. One friend of mine has just won £500,000; on the other hand, you could make a loss. For a standard tournament with 100 players who all pay a £50 entrance fee in order to take part, the winner would get to take home around 30 per cent of the £5,000 prize pool – about £1,500. A very lucky few get sponsorship deals, which mean you don’t have to use your own money to enter tournaments.

Third, assume that something good is hidden within each difficulty or challenge. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, a major proponent of positive thinking, once said, “Whenever God wants to give us a gift, he wraps it up in a problem.” The bigger the gift you have coming, the bigger the problem you will receive. But the wonderful thing is that if you look for the gift, you will always find it.

4. Seek the Valuable Lesson
Fourth, assume that whatever situation you are facing at the moment is exactly the right situation you need to ultimately be successful. This situation has been sent to you to help you learn something, to help you become better, to help you expand and grow.

Decide to Be Positive
A Positive Mental Attitude is indispensable to your success. You can be as positive as you want to be if you will simply think about the future, focus on the solution and look for the good. 10 Reasons Why I hate Recruitment Agents

Given that I have finally recruited my new CTO and he started today I thought I would write up my thoughts on recruitment agencies. The guys in the office know immediately when one rings me up because my normal pleasant demeanor (honest) suddenly disappears and is replaced with that of the attitude of someone who has had a visit from (Jehovah witness, bailiffs, tax collector). So if you are a recruitment agency I’d advise you not read any further.

These are my 10 reasons why I have this rather unhealthy attitude towards them.
 

1. Asking ‘What is your interview process’

This is a classic, every agency wants to give their candidate ‘the edge’ by finding out what our techniques are for recruitment, I deliberately give them random feedback or just ignore this as I don’t want the interview to be prepared! That is the whole point, if they need to prepare for an interview then they ‘ARE THE WRONG PERSON!!’

2. Ring you up to tell you nothing

This really gets me going, so either

  1. they send me an email and then ring up immediately afterwards to ask me what they thought of the email, do they think I do not have a reply button?
  2. They ring up to have a ‘a chat’ – right yes someone working in public sector may have time to while away but I actually have a job to do

3. Asking to come meet us

At some point every agency decides (mostly at the beginning) that it would be good ‘to come meet’ – Why do they want to do this? Well they think they can better ‘judge’ the sort of person who fits into my company. WRONG – Only I know this, what they are really trying to do is build a bond with your company and that by visiting they will get some preferential treatment. DOUBLE WRONG.

4. Editing Candidate CV’s

Yes this happens ALL the time. It is an easy one to spot because if you get CV’s from more than one agency you can compare them if you get the same person from different agencies. And what the edits? Normally they have added any particular requirements that you have specified, or rejigged it so that the bits you are looking for are the most prominent.

5. Lying

Yup, all of them, all the time. Whatever they need to do including lying is the name of the game. In the last 6 months I have made it 100% clear to all the agencies I work with that we are not interested in contractors, or anyone who has previously been contracting. But I repeatedly got people who on the CV showed as permanent then turned out (when I got references) that they were actually contracting.
What else? If it gives them an edge then they will forget / deceive / outright lie if required.

6. Imaginary Companies

Another favourite, if you have a candidate that you are really interested in (and they get wind of this) then all kind of imaginary companies can appear that are also ‘interested’ and are likely to be offering more than you. Do not fall for this ploy, pay what you want someone is worth and ignore anything else.

7. Spam

They love it, spam spam spam. There are several UK based agencies (and I am sure we are not alone) that the general business plan is to basically spider the web find anyone making any mention of needing programmers and then randomly emailing them candidates that they are never going to want. I have sent numerous emails to these companies asking to be taken off their mailing lists, never to any avail.

8. Removing Contact Details

The other little CV editing that takes place is the removal of any way of us contacting the candidate directly. Because the judge us on their own terms that we are not trust worthy enough to go off and recruit that person directly. So you get stupid things like not displaying surnames (you only get that once you go to full interview!) or when setting up a telephone interview they use their internal phone system to connect you both together rather than just giving you the number.

9. Recruiting those they just placed

I have caught out several agencies trying to poach people that they have previously placed with me. Basically all recruitment agencies store their databases on ROM (read only memory) because try as you might it is impossible to get yourself removed. So once they have placed someone with you, they still appear in their listings, and so they still come back and ring them up again to see if they ‘are happy’.

The most fun way to handle this is to have them hand over the phone and say in the nicest voice ‘Hi there, this is [insert name]’s manager, how can I help you?’ you wouldnt believe how fast they try and get off the phone.

10. Lastly they are all scum

I am sure they are actually nice people outside of their work but the pressures to work on a commission make them do things that normal people would never stoop so low to do.

Just to balance this article, I will add my one thing I like about them.

They on occasion find me brilliant people

6. Imaginary Companies – all candidates we souce have to take a proactive approach to apply to your company they need to submit their CV personally to your account. We do not submit candidates to any other companies, and we dont work on commission anyway!

7. SPAM – we prefer ham.

8. Removing Contact Details – nope – we definitley dont do this, all CVs are never edited by Zenrec, our employers get the works, warts and all.

9. Recruiting those they have just placed – Zenrec does not approach any candidates, all our candidates take a proactive approach to applying to jobs with our clients. So this is a big no way.

CV Cover Letters: Your First Chance to Impress and Make Employers Go WOW

Do you know the 3 Essential Rules to follow when writing your CV cover letter?

If you are looking work in Belfast or Northern Ireland you are not alone! Employers routinely receive responses from hundreds of applicants for any given job. Your goal is to make an employer read your CV and go “WOW” – “I want to meet this person!”

Include a bulleted area to emphasise accomplishments that are related to the targeted job.

Not only does this break up large blocks of text that an employer might find daunting (or boring), but it also draws the eye towards the most important part of the cover letter – what YOU have to offer! Turn your accomplishments into real benefits that you can provide for the employer.

You need to be careful not to make simple mistakes that can cost you a potential job. Use this checklist to avoid annoying your potential employers…

There are more job seekers than job openings, so do NOT make things harder on yourself by doing any of the things on this list! Never, ever do these!

1. Apply for jobs you are not qualified for. (Eh?!?)

2. Send a generic cover letter that doesn’t identify the position you’re interested in, or match your qualifications to the job. (Hmmmmmmmmmmm…..)

3. Put a useless, seen-it-a-million-times, Yada Yada Yada, Objective on your CV that says you want a “challenging opportunity with a forward-looking company where I can utilize my knowledge, experience and skills to our mutual advantage.” (Yawwwwnnnnnnnnnnnnnn……)

4. Make your CV a list of past duties instead of accomplishments.

5. Lie, brag or exaggerate about ANYTHING. (Cringe!)

6. Keep making repetitive “notice-me” calls to ask if your CV was received. (!)

7. Fail to respond quickly to messages left on your answering machine or voicemail. (Hello?!)

8. Expect them to schedule your phone-screening interview after normal business hours.

9. Refuse to give your salary requirements when requested prior to the interview.

10. Fail to research the company prior to the interview.

11. Arrive at the interview late. (doh!)

12. Be rude to the receptionist. (Classy)

13. Put “See attached CV” instead of filling out the application completely.

14. Be unprepared at the interview.

15. Ask “What’s in it for ME?” type questions at the interview.

16. Fail to send a thank-you letter after the interview.

17. Call to ask about the status of the position days before when you were told they’d make a decision.

I am excited to be part of the Princes Trust Charity and I am looking forward to developing my role in the organisation as a business mentor.

I spent Friday morning in a business seminar held by the Princes Trust in association with the IFA on “Successful Marketing Tips for Your Business” with Guest Speaker Geoff Wilson who just won an award for Marketing Director of the Year.

STILL WAITING FOR AN AGENCY CALL???

REGISTERED WITH AN AGENCY? STILL WAITING FOR A CALL?

The recession is effecting many businesses, every time we turn on the news we hear stories of businesses having to make redundancies, and many people are loosing their jobs at a time when living costs are going up.

I hear countless stories about people registering with agencies and not hearing anything. But really it isnt surprising and the agencies are not to blame, as there are not many jobs about, and the jobs that are about, employers do not want to pay out the large agency fees to get people as cutting costs at a time like this is crucial.

Recruitment agencies charge employers a percentage of your salary if the employer hires you.

Here is an example of what an agency will charge your future potential employer…

£15,000 – 15% commission = £2250 + VAT = £2644
£18,000 – 17% commission = £3060 + VAT = £3596
£20,000 – 20% commission = £4000 + VAT = £4700
£25,000 – 25% commission = £6250 + VAT = £7344
£30,000 – 25% commission = £7500 + VAT = £8813
